I have joined Instagram under the name of Tometimereadingandknitting.  I am Musingrunner on Ravelry, Twitter, Good Reads, and The Fold Line.

Knitting chat begins at 11:50.

Books mentioned:  Drowned City graphic novel by Don Brown, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave by Stephanie Barron, the Hound of the Baskerville by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Finished Objects: Vanilla socks in Blueberry Chick Yarns in the Umbrella Drinks at the Swim Up Bar for the Down Cellar Studio’s Splash Pad Party ’16.

Works in Progress: Zinone by Andi Satterlund in Quince and Co. Sparrow linen yarn in the Fundi color for the Outfit Along 2016 hosted by Lauren of the Lladybird blog and Andi of Untangling Knots.

Marooned by Hunter Hammersen in Vice Yarns Geraldo colorway. These are pair #6 of my 12 for Vollenvine’s Little Box of Socks KAL on the Yarngasm podcast.

Surprise Strips by Anna Johanna with my sock scraps.

Lafitte shawl by Denise Bell of Lost City Knits out of Lost City Knits Oak Barn Merino lace yarn.

Sewing: Simplicity 1607 in a bird print knit from Girl Charlee.  Next up is the Hollyburn skirt from Sewaholic patterns in some cotton lawn from Robert Kaufman.

Spinning: Organic alpaca and Polwarth from Owl About Yarn in the Sea Glass colorway. I am planning in spinning this in a heavy fingering weight two-ply for a shawl. I am looking for suggestions for a shawl pattern that is good for a variegated handspun yarn.

Training:  I am in training for a women’s sprint triathlon at the end of July.  It will be a hot one! Dogster wants to try out for the track and archery teams next year.

Thanks for watching!

Spinning Sea Glass

This is what is currently on my drop spindle, a braid of organic alpaca and Polwarth from Owl About Yarn. I am trying for a two-ply fingering weight yarn for a shawl. If you have any suggestions for shawl patterns that are well suited to handspun, please let me know!

Outfit Along 2016

Lauren of Lladybird and Andi Satterlund of Untangling Knots are hosting their annual Outfit Along in which participants knit and sew coordinating pieces to make an outfit. This year’s outfit consists of Zinone by Andi Satterlund and the Sewaholic Hollyburn skirt.

I chose to knit my Zinone out of Quince and Co. Sparrow in the Fundi colorway. Sparrow is a linen yarn, which should get softer and softer with washing and wear. My Hollyburn will be out of Robert Kaufman cotton lawn in the Woodland Clearing print.

The Outfit Along runs from June 1 – July 31st and I will probably need every single day of it to get my outfit finished! Watch here for updates. Also, I joined Instagram as TomeTimeReadingandKnitting if you are interested in following me there.

Beatrix Skater Dress by Named Clothing

A few weeks ago, during Graduation season, I realized that I really didn’t have anything dressy to wear to such occasions.  I have plenty of short dresses for date nights, but nothing for an evening work event.

As I already had the pattern and the fabric to sew the Beatrix Skater Dress by Named Clothing, I went ahead and sewed it up. The fabric is a black ponte knit from Girl Charlee.  It must have some nylon content because it feels a little bit light nylon tights.

Instead of using the high collar pieces, I chose to lower the neckline a bit and finish it with a bias binding that I made from the dress fabric. Have I mentioned before that I LOVE making bias tape? Well, I do.

The only change I would make in future versions of this dress (and there will be more…) would be to put some darts in the back bodice for a swayback adjustment. You can see in the picture of the back of the dress that there is some extra fabric back there. Other than that small change, I love the dress!  It will be a much worn wardrobe staple. I could even throw a jacket or cardigan over it and wear it to work.  What about you?  What are you sewing this summer?

Books: The Last Star by Rick Yancey and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Sean Grahame-Smith.

Finished Objects: Prairie Fire by KIS Designs in Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Glitter Sock in the Arctic colorway and Shibui Silk Cloud in the Fjord colorway.

Works in Progress: Surprise Stripes by Anna Johanna in sock yarn scraps, Marooned Socks by Hunter Hammersen in Vice Yarns Geraldo colorway, and Zinone by Andi Satterlund in Quice and Co. Sparrow in the Fundi color.

Sewing: Beatrix Skater Dress by Named patterns in black Ponte de Roma from Girl Charlee.

Spinning: I finished spinning the black Merino from WildThyme Fibers and will pair it with my Hobbledehoy spin in the Robin Shawl by Lee Meredith.

Thanks for watching and please leave comments if you enjoy the podcast!

X-Ray Top

Finished! This is the Savanah Cami from Seamwork magazine in an X-Ray print from Mood. It took me awhile to finish the bias binding and get the straps on, but it was worth the wait. The only modification made to the pattern were the omission of lace and while the pattern calls for cutting the pieces on the bias, that was not possible with this print. But, there is plenty of wearing ease included, so it worked out fine. Happy sewing!
